Exchange Student Experiences Cultural Changes

By Mark Zellar

Snails must move out of their shell to experience new life; that’s exactly what Lidiia Pylypenko has done.

Pylypenko came to U.S.A to experience a new way of life and so far, she is enjoying herself.

She moved here from a small town of 80,000 people in Alexandria, Ukraine .

The residents live in flats and public transportation is widely available to minors because the driving age is 18. Pylypenko’s family goes to church on major holidays.

"Church is very strict and is not for fun," Pylypenko explained..

Pylypenko is a junior in BHS and is enrolled in band, where she is in pit and plays the marimba.

In Ukraine, school uniforms were mandatory. Classes at her school were 45 minutes long and each day consisted of 7-8 classes. Breaks were usually fifteen minutes with one larger twenty minute break. There are only eleven grades and junior andsenior high were in the same school.

The government sponsors special programs for studying to further the studies of students in the university. Biology, chemistry, physics, geometry, and algebra were offered starting in 6th -7th grade.

There are not any extracurricular activities where she is from unless attending musical school or dance studio is included.

In Ukraine, all teenagers care what they wear and how they look and will not go anywhere if they are not sure that they look perfect.

"Here most of students do not care what they are wearing, but Ukrainian students and American students wear clothes almost the same," stated Pylypenko.

BHS welcomes Plylypenko to America.
